Some older KTS versions store license files in: C:\ProgramData\Kaspersky Lab\KTS\<version>\Data\ Replacing the existing .dat file there work, but not recommended — better use the import function.

An upcoming revision could allow the existing file to be “re‑signed” remotely. The KTS client would periodically contact the license server to obtain a new signature extension, eliminating the need to manually replace the .dat file every year.

Kaspersky has moved away from .dat license files. Current activation uses: KTS-Subscription-2026-05-24-P-.dat

In contrast, a binary .dat file is for machine consumption. Opening it in a text editor will produce a screen of unreadable symbols and gibberish, as it contains data in a compact, non-textual format that only the original software can interpret. Given the "Subscription" context, a binary format would be highly likely for a Kaspersky file to prevent tampering and protect licensing information.
